Safety First: Questions to ask your newborn photographer before booking

Last week there was uproar within the newborn photography industry when a very well-known photographer was visited by some new parents claiming that their baby was dropped on it's head by another photographer.

This made me feel sick to my stomach when I read it, but unfortunately, without official accreditation in the industry right now, literally anyone can become a newborn photographer and wing it without proper hands-on training.

>> But this is the difference when you go cheap with an inexperienced photographer who has not invested in training and education! <<

Since the beginning of my pivot into newborn photography in 2018 I have invested so much time, money and passion into training with experienced photographers to not only make me feel confident in my skills, but also clients who come to me.

You are handing over your precious new bundle to someone, so PLEASE make sure they are trained and YOU are confident in their abilities...

  • Ask about their training and experience with other photographers.

  • Look at their photos - is baby comfortable and not lying awkwardly on limbs and props? Are baby's hands and feet a different colour to their body/face? Does baby look cosy and content?

  • Ask whether they have regular first aid training, insurance, DBS checks.

  • A newborn should NEVER be left to balance unsupported in certain poses, so check behind the scenes footage to see if safety is being put first.

  • Read Google and Facebook reviews from real life clients.

A newborn photo session is a once in a lifetime event as your little one is only a newborn for a couple of weeks. Please don't sacrifice your family's comfort, safety and experience for a 'too good to be true' bargain.
